The roads were burning like hot coal so was the sun's power that day. Sun was at its brightest shine that day. Nalini was arranging the foods at the dining table, she made sure that the cutleries, plates, and tumblers were all neatly placed along with the menu she planned for the day. She made sure that no items from her menu have been missed. Nalini ( calling made): Saroja... Saroja... where is the mango pickle it seems to be missing from the table.
Saroja: Nalini ma it's all ready, it's hidden in-between the sambar and curry bowls. See...
Nalini (Checking the table ): positioning her nose spectacles searched for the pickle pot. "Yup I got it "she whispered.
Slowly Nalini moved towards the front door of her house gazing through the lawns looking at the gate she was awaiting them.
She could sense the heat of the sun (positioning her nose spectacles) she was gazing up at the sun screamed Saroja ...keep few bottles of water in the fridge. Ice the juice. It's too hot today, my daughter prefers cold water during sunny noons.
Saroja's phone was ringing Saroja took the phone and was shouting " enough of studying come and help me. Who is helping you financially? try to respect our owners. Be loyal to your owner, who pays your fees".
(Saroja's daughter was in her 10th standard. It was her exam time.)
Nalini heard this conversation
Nalini to Saroja: Never stop someone who is sincere in their duty. Your daughter is a student her duty is to study. Scoring high marks would be her act of loyalty towards me ( her owner) mumbled Nalini.
Saroja: But mam today your daughter and family is coming .. your granddaughter has listed a protocol to be executed so that she could enjoy her stay here. I can't manage singlehandedly madam, as I have kitchen works. It would be helpful for me if my daughter joins me. It would also be learning for her to join in work from next year.
Nalini: What about Savitha?
Saroja :(Savitha was Nalini's gardener and vessel washer) Savitha is on leave, today madam.
(Suddenly a voice popped up)
No, you can't ask a board exam person to procrastinate her studying that's wrong - exclaimed Pinky.
(Pinky was Nalini's granddaughter. )
Nalini: Whoa! when you came?
Pinky: I entered silently, I ambled through the door when Saroja aunty was talking about her daughter.
Pinky then facing Saroja: No aunty you can never stop a girl's aim for my pleasure's sake I could manage with the help of mom and nanny and execute my plans.
Pinky: Nanny we ladies should support another lady. Their whole generation couldn't be servants they have to move ahead of their state.
Hearing this Nalini was overwhelmed about her 12-year-old granddaughter.
Nalini was scrolling back through the days when she was in her tenth. She had a glimpse of her village the poorest and smallest hut she lived in. Her dress and her, to the earth, grounded parents. And her caste and the job affixed to her caste as servants. Because of which her parents never allowed her to study the way they used to call her, compel her to work for others in their home as a servant.
How her progenitors blindly believed education is unwanted for their caste and how they believed they are meant to be servants inherently and inheritably for generations.
How she broke it with her strong determination to study. How she changed her whole generation. She was proud of the legacy she had left for her family.
How she broke it with her strong determination to study. How she changed her whole generation. She was proud of the legacy she had left for her family.
Pondering through these Nalini to Saroja :
Saroja I was once like your daughter, we were financially, exactly in your position that day. My parents were exactly with your mindset. They didn't give me the time to study due to their innocence and ignorance. They believed we were born to be servants. Irrespective, of all the hindrances I passed my tenth after 3 attempts. I managed to study after all the hectic work, the burden of being a servant at many houses. Asap I finished my tenth with the help of a few golden hearts, my teachers, and a few equality-minded people's help I managed to get a government job. They guided me through the process as our entire generation wasn't aware of those. From that my whole generation has changed and my daughter and her daughter a whole generation have been developed and we are not meant to be servants anymore. We have changed our legacy, our society gave us in the name of caste.
So could be your daughter one-day. So, please allow her to chase her dreams in whichever field she believes she could win.
Pinky: clapped and smiled running to nanny
Looking at her granddaughter Pinky, Nalini proudly uttered "It's in the blood".
Saroja was inspired.
Horan at the gate ...pinky parents arrived.

Nalini: Then how you came first? Alone?
Pinky: Mom stopped the car at the entrance of our street and was engaged in an official conference call. I got dad's permission and walked up to our house with dad's vigilance from the street entrance.
Nalini: chuckled. patted her granddaughter and they moved to the dining table.
